What Skills Do I Need to Provide Personal Financial Planning Services?

The AICPA Competency Self-Assessment Tool (CAT) provides current and future CPAs with a basis for self-assessment and career planning. CAT supports learning development that addresses the competencies, knowledge, skills, and abilities important to CPAs in alignment with the core values and competencies expressed in the CPA Vision.

Here are some of the ways that this tool can benefit CPAs who choose to use it:

·         Provides a listing of competencies relevant to CPAs for the following competency models:

o        Business and Industry/New Finance

o        Audit

o        Government

o        Personal Financial Planning

o        Fraud Prevention, Detection, and Investigation

o        ElderCare/PrimePlus

Note that other models will be added to keep up with the scope of professional practice.

·         Helps CPAs evaluate their proficiency level in these competencies for current or future positions

·         Allows CPAs to target specific competencies for their development

·         Suggests a variety of learning activities to develop the selected competencies
